Ay Caramba -- Salsa!

I'm taking salsa lessons with a good friend, heretofore known as Samba. She likes to call me ChaCha. We are an endearing pair: Salt and Pepper, Shoes and Socks, Hoops and Yoyo, Tits and Ass.

Since my accident in July '08, I'm careful about doing things that involve neck or shoulder movement (trigger points in my scapular are still temperamental); but I figured optimistically that most of the salsa movements are waist down, right? Or is it waist up?

Anyway, I have always loved to dance and said to hell with it. If it hurts, I’ll stop. So I found myself in a little east Austin dance studio with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, just-slippery-enough wood floors, and exotic snag-a-man dancing shoes along the walls that beckoned to the twenty-year-old long dormant inside me. One particular pair said, "Forget your sissy arch issues; forget those pesky foot cramps that make you cry. Step into my world. Come dance in me."

Oh, it was hard to resist those sleek lines, 2.5-inch heels, and ankle straps that make your calves look so nice and toned. But I chickened out and remained in my sultry workday loafers. Well, I didn’t want to be pulling on my toes, flailing and screaming in pain on my first night!

Like I said, I love to dance. One of my husbands liked it but the others wouldn't do it if I promised them a month of BJs. Or maybe it was just that I never promised them a month of BJs. But for too many years, I have watched dancing couples from afar (unless I had a few buttery nipple shots, in which case, I danced by myself) and wished I had a kick-ass partner to twirl and swing and slide me around the dance floor. Occasionally, I’d uncover one (read: steal him off the dance floor); but more often than not, guys are content to stand around with a beer in their hands and gawk at the eye candy in tight jeans. Now I’ve decided to just learn how to salsa like a pro and show up at the clubs ready to cumbaya my way into the pick-her-she-knows-how-to-dance circle. Oh yes, I can!

I used to have a Latino buddy who took me Tejano dancing. Because Chris was such a good partner and leader, I had to fight for my time on the floor with him. His friend and my boyfriend at the time, Darrow, was a dancer too; but he liked to rush the steps and couldn’t stay with the beat of the music. Sorry, dude, but it’s true. Unfortunately, when Darrow and I split up, I lost my fave dancing partner and -- next up! -- gained a hottie musician. Ay, caramba! I ask you, how can a guy be a drummer, control the beat of the music, and yet have no rhythm? (Should have promised him those BJs.) And I married him! (eye roll) I know!

Anyway, back to my lessons. Salsa is a kick! Though I’m quite stiff in the neck, I love it. And I must say, Samba showed me up the second week when she hit the dance floor in a pricey pair of sleek, black fuck-me-all-over-the-place heels. Why, I oughtta . . . Now I have to buy new shoes. Oh, that is awful, isn’t it?

I have never been much of a dancer. It does sound like fun, however!

after being married for 25 years to a man who wouldn't dance? not happening... gotta have at least one player in the line up who will tear up a dance floor with me.

I think you need a gay boyfriend who can pick out your new shoes and be your dance partner. That should do it.

If you love Salsa, then you should look for a Zumba exercise class because it's all the Latin dances and it so damn fun!

When you buy those FM pumps, you've got post a picture.

I long for the days when my feet did not hurt and I could dance the night away... what a great work-out for the figure it was. Keep up the dancing girl... it will do you good in so many ways.

I wish I could dance. My body hurts all over. All the time. But I certainly could listen to salsa music all day long!

"the ever endearing tits and ass" HA. You are too funny, and this sounds like a great time.

Get your ass in some heels, girl!

Wow, those shoes say sexy all the way to Seattle!!! (No, I’m not. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) I have a secret obsession with Dancing with the Stars. (Really, I’m not.) I took ballroom dancing in College and had a blast. Salsa has a lot of sexy moves but I don’t think there is room to do it in your closet; salsa I mean.

This more about shoes and less about nachos than I was expecting. Still...great shoes. Enjoy the salsa!

Oh, how I love to dance. I do it as often as possible. I was in band in school and have great rythm, but alas...cannot salsa dance to save my ever' lovin' life. Maybe it was because I'd had too many mojitos before the free salsa lessons at the bar started, but I just couldn't get it!

Good luck, have fun and buy the shoes!!

Fragrant Liar, as always you are one of my favourite bloggers. I need a beautiful blogger award or something ...I'll try and find one and then figure out what to do with it.

I'm a terrible dancer, with arthritis and no balance (meniere's disease) ...addicted to ..
So you think you can dance ..(Aussie version of course.) it's on tonight! One of my most special movies is an Australian send up of dancing called Strictly Ballroom (get it on dvd if you can) ..
and I also enjoyed Along Came Polly (American with hmmm Jennifer Aniston) with Salsa dancing in it!
I can't really wear high heels but I still buy them sometimes. Throw them on the bedroom floor for show hahaha... Now you know for SURE I'm crazy.
I love SO much that you said "one of your husbands ...but the others..." which made it sound like you were very like Elizabeth Taylor with a dozen or so.

I need to be out more hahaha...

Love you.

Sounds like fun! My husband wants to take ballroom dancing lessons. So far, we haven't been able to get coordinating dates on the calendar (most due to his catering schedule).

I love to dance too. In my young and single days, I went dancing every weekend, although my dance skills are limited to the Two-Step, Tennessee Waltz, El Paso, and Swing!

Have Fun!

I love to dance, too, and have married a man with no sense of rhythm and who is tone-deaf to boot.

To say that Dance, Dance and Karaoke Revolution are interesting pastimes in our house is an understatement.

Ah, husbands never seem to be able to dance. It's always the 'bad' boys that really have the moves and can dance the night away... the ones you DON'T marry. Tradeoffs, bah, humbug.

Buy the shoes, dammnit!

sounds like fun!! I'm going to take belly dancing/salsa dancing classes at the end of the year, once I've dropped a bit of weight so my knee can handle it .. I've always wanted to learn :D

You so gotta get those CFM heels .. you didn't need that one ankle anyway, did you? lol

I just mentioned to my GF that we need to take some dancing lessons. It's been awhile but I know I loved it.

I, like you, was married to a great dancer one time - that was all he was good at - and now to a non-dancer. I love to dance so think I may need to get me a gay dance partner like Comedy Goddess suggested you do. Sounds like fun!

Wow I love salsa dancing! Well, I've never done it but it looks like a blast. I love dancing. And I love buying those fuck-me high heels. Woo! I couldn't get Dr. Jekyll out on the dance floor if his life depended on it. In fact, he'd chew off his own arm to get out of it. I could promise him a lifetime of BJs and no go. *sigh* Why couldn't I pick a man that was a little of this one, a little of this one, and a lot of that one?? Wouldn't that be cool???

of course, if men could do that, we all know what every woman in the world would look like. Yep, you got it. Huge boobs, no brain, long legs, tiny waist. *sigh*.

Get the shoes! And then get more shoes! And more and more and more shoes! And great outfits. I'm so excited I can't wait to see the pictures!

That sounds like so much fun! You're going to knock them dead.

Girl, you had me at tits and ass. There's nothing I like more than another chick who can say it like it is and make no apologies. Wanna be my new bestest friend? Oh yeah girlie, I'm going to following you now. Possibly stalking you.

I think it is wonderful how you have taken the chance to do what many of us only talk about. You really know how to put your money where your mouth is! Try the latin-dance exercise class at the "Y." You may like it!!!

How fun!!! I used to go dancing every night, until I got married. Can't believe I married a man who doesn't dance.
I would love to learn the dance steps that everyone is doing now.

Sounds like so much fun! Be careful you don't hurt yourself!

Every mother of boys should require them to take dance lessons and end this terrible drought for chicas of the beat.

And I think you should go for the shoes. But 2.5 is not enough. go for 3. :)
